Sentosa Merlion
a. Overall appeal of the attraction
Overall, the Sentosa Merlion has successfully captivated its
visitors by displaying 3D artefacts that visitors can have a feel of. Upon
reaching the attraction, a sense of anticipation can be felt in the air as the
whole area was bathed in dim light. Visitors are brought on a journey as the
whole attraction was meant to discover on the founding of Singapore and how the
Merlion came about. The whole atmosphere in the Sentosa Merlion, along with old
artefacts and visuals, definitely sparked curiosity which therefore keeps the
visitors anticipated to uncover more.
b. Well-presented areas/services/features
During the moment of
truth, the staff located at the entrance was fast and efficient as she managed
to clear the crowd swiftly. Despite the one-man show, the staff was friendly and
courteous as she managed to spare some time explaining about a redeemable
souvenir. A card can be exchanged for a prosperity coin.
In
the Sentosa Merlion itself, the attraction offers a wide array of visuals and
artefacts that visitors can engage with. The visuals and artefacts allow
visitors to take their time to read and absorb new information before moving on
to the show screening.
A 4-minutes show was
also played as part of the journey to discover about Singapore’s founding and
history. The show gave visitors, both local and international, a better
understanding on how Singapore was founded with relevant reference to Sang Nila
Utama and the Malay Archipelago. During the show, it was observed that Chinese
subtitles was also shown on screen. The reason being, it is evident that
Singapore is receiving an influx of Chinese visitors, hence, it is only clear
that signages/shows/subtitles should be in accordance with their native
language.
Lastly, a complimentary
photography service is located at the mouth of the Sentosa Merlion. Accompanied
by the sunset and cityscape, the complimentary photography service provides a
great memento for international visitors to bring home because a picture only
tells a thousand words!
c. How engaging have the attractions been, in relation to
the visitors around you?
The attraction itself
have engaged visitors in the best way possible to educate about Singapore’s
history in the most interactive way. It is most often that museums play a big
role in documenting about Singapore’s history and culture. However, having an
attraction that acts as a form of an edutainment site, creates a more
stimulating experience. Like the other visitors around who were also present at
the attraction, we paid close attention to the facts located around the
structures and watched the show attentively. During the show, it was emphasised
that the Merlion brings prosperity and affluence and relatively, the redeemable
souvenir (prosperity coin) corresponds to the beliefs.
d. Excitements and Disappointments
Excitements:
· Able to deepen knowledge
about the Singapore history through edutainment. Visuals and artefacts are
presented instead of books and papers.
· Able to witness the view from
the mouth and crown of the Merlion for the first time. Upon reaching the viewing
area, it was discovered that the height of the Sentosa Merlion is similar to
Big Ben Clock Tower and the Statue of Liberty.
Disappointments:
· Small viewing space. Space
could only hold a maximum of only 5 people at the mouth and 10 people at the
crown of the Merlion. Due to space constraints, other visitors had to wait for
their turn to climb up and experience the view.
